Technical Principle
The APG-710 can operate in two modes:
- Binary gas: The thermal conductivity detector (TCD) is paired with a Wheatstone bridge for continuous measurement.
- Multi-component gas: An automated injection method using a TCD coupled with a Wheatstone bridge connected to a molecular sieve column.
Measurement principle
Gases, depending on their unique molecular structures, all exhibit specific thermal conductivity properties. In the vast majority of cases, the thermal conductivity of gases ranges from 0.01 to 0.03 W/mK. Particularly noteworthy are helium (0.15 W/mK) and hydrogen (0.18 W/mK).
The significant difference in thermal conductivity between hydrogen and other gases can be effectively utilized by a TCD as a measurement method.
The TCD consists of two identical Wheatstone bridges, each equipped with a sensing element. One bridge is exposed to the sample gas, while the other serves as a reference gas. If the gas is a binary gas, the reference gas used is the non-hydrogen component that constitutes the background gas in the sample. If the gas is a multi-component gas, the reference gas employed is identical to the carrier gas.
When hydrogen is present in the sample gas, the difference in thermal conductivity between the sample gas and the reference gas will cause an imbalance in the Wheatstone bridge, resulting in a measurable voltage.
The magnitude of this voltage is proportional to the integral of time and the hydrogen concentration in the sample stream. This calculation is performed by the AGP-710-H2 controller, which then outputs a 4-20mA signal that is proportional to the hydrogen concentration.
